Behind The Scenes Of Travel Blogging – Work Video Diary Week 1

What do you actually do for a living?

I get this question a lot and the answer I give is always different. So I’ve decided to try something new on the blog and will be keen to know if you like it!

I’ve alluded in the past to some of the not-so-glamourous work that goes on behind the scenes of this travel blog but decided I would lay it all bare in a new video series. Each week I’ll be bringing you a snapshot of what I’ve been working on and where from so that you can get an insight into the life of a full time travel blogger.

This week I also reveal some pretty big secrets I’ve been keeping from you with regards to my personal life and some upcoming changes to this very blog!

So, please watch, enjoy and let me know what you think. This first one is fairly long as I intro the series but they will get more snappy as time goes on!

Where I’m Working:

London, home office

What I’ve Been Reading:

As The Bird Flies > My Thoughts: Listen To Yourself

Chapter Friday > Pinterest Boards We Love

Mrs O Around The World > Understanding British Airways Miles (Avios), Tier Points and the magic American Express Voucher

What I’ve Been Writing:

Yoga In The Clouds At The View From The Shard

Girls’ Weekend In Lille

Travel Beauty Essentials At World Duty Free

What I’m Drinking:

T2 Melbourne Breakfast Tea (gorgeous hint of vanilla!)

What I’m Talking About:

Melanie Duncan’s Entrepreneuress Academy

Was the information in the video what you expected? Are you a blogger with a similar schedule? I’d love to what your work week looks like!

Update: I’ve already had some great feedback from my blogging friend Vicky Flip Flop. She suggests I raise the camera next time so I’m not looking down so much. I’m very new to this vlogging stuff so if you have any other tips please do let me know 🙂

Love the video! A great job at providing insight into life of a travel blogger. Mine is more centered around freelance writing and not quite as busy- but from now on I will just direct them to you when asked what I do. 😉

Love your new video! I get the same questions every day. Some of my friends still think I just travel for free.

Also, my inner voice will have a British accent today thanks to your lovely video. 🙂

Also, forgot to mention: I also work with a weekly to do list. That way I don’t feel trapped in doing things I don’t feel like doing because they have been assigned to a certain day — I can do them whenever I feel like it at any point during the week. I love my Knock Knock calendar!

Great video!! Congrats on the move – I spent a year living and working in Melbourne, and absolutely loved it down there. Sounds like you keep yourself quite busy with a variety of activities in this “new media” culture. I’m looking forward to learning more about it! 🙂

A huge THANK YOU for the rundown and helpful ideas for bloggers. And I love the video, it brings you into a personable light, and free form talking can be quicker and more succinct than writing a full post sometimes.

Thanks so much Allison! Was a bit nervous to try this style – usually us bloggers hide behind our posts rather then being in them! – but I have been so touched and encouraged by everyone’s support and ended up really enjoying it!

I loved the video and found it really interesting Jayne! You are most definitely one of my blogging inspirations, and one day I hope to make it into a career similar to yours (but in the health/fitness sector). You’ve actually been on my mind lately as I was thinking about looking for a “blogging mentor” to get advice, learn from, and help me to get where I want to go – so maybe once you are settled in Australia I’ll touch base with you again. Congratulations on the big move, I am sure you will love it – and maybe one day you can come and visit me in New Zealand too! All the very best for your move – looking forward to the next video! 🙂 Leah

Thanks Leah – I am so touched by your words. I know what a talented and personable blogger you are and would love to help in any way I could. Let’s definitely touch base once I am set up in Oz and maybe we can arrange a regular skype chat together? I’m keen to explore more of Australasia so you can expect a visit in NZ for sure! J

    Hi Jayne,
Really enjoyed this video and am so interested with you moving to Australia as to how you are going to continue with your Blogging Business – how it will adapt and the challenges and triumphs it will bring. Do you class yourself as being able to work location independently? and how does this work with emigrating?
    So many questions I have!
Have a wonderful time – the last time I was there I opted to stay with Airbnb in the Sydney suburb of Earlwood with a local family. The mum cycled into the city to work. Around Bondi and Bronte the houses were lovely and the vibe for me, very much like London but with the beautiful blue on the horizon.

Hi Janice, thanks so much for your support. We’re really excited about the move too!

In answer to your questions – most of what I do is location independent – I will continue my copywriting contracts and running my 2 blogs as usual. Some of the consultantcy work I do here in London I am hoping to supplement with some of the same in Sydney but it may take a little while for that side of the business to grow as I build my network. But in general the aim is to remain self employed and keep writing about how that is going for the readers of this blog!

We have rented an apartment with AirBnb for the first month close to Surry Hills and hope to find something more long term in the same area. A beach house would be the long term goal 😉

Thanks again for stopping by and sharing your experiences.

      J
